The caves in Bulgaria

The experienced explorers of the caves in Bulgaria have, up till now, discovered and made maps of about 4250 caves and chasms. Their variety is due to the fact that a great part of the territory of our country is covered by carbonate rocks, precipitated during the geological eras. With a lesser or a greater amount of Karsts at different places, they have formed a lot of caves and chasms. The greater part of the caves is situated in limestone and marble and only 3 are in sandstone and 60 – in volcano rocks. For convenience sake the country is divided into 4 areas with 50 karsts regions. The Balkan area – near Lovetch and Vratza – is the richest in caves and chasms. The Kotel and Troyan regions are characterized by deep chasms and chasmal caves.
In town Chepelare there is a Museum of Speleology and Bulgarian Karsts. It is an unique museum not only for Bulgaria, but also for the Balkan Peninsula and Europe.

The deepest chasmal cave in Bulgaria is 415 m deep and the longest one is 15 535 m long. The cave of Jean-Bernard holds world priority in depth – 1535 m and Flint-Mammoth Cave System, with its 484 300 m, is the longest in the world.

Hundred and eight of the Bulgarian caves are declared landmarks of nature and history. From the cave inhabitants, 600 species are found in our country, 40 of which are new for science and 100 are troglobions / typical blind cave fauna /.

Some of the caves are show caves, so that the splendor of their underground world is made accessible to the lovers of the beauties of nature.
